IT'S COLD OUTSIDE+ + + but between us it's worse in here
AJ waited outside the owlery, cringing every time a shriek or a hoot came from within. She was bouncing on the balls of her feet, staring out at the school grounds, refusing to turn around. She called over her shoulder.
"Are you two done in there?! I'm hungry and we're going to miss breakfast!" Her two girlfriends were mailing letters to their family, and AJ wanted to send one too. However, there was the minor issue of AJ's intense dislike for animals, and seeing as how e-mail wasn't accessible at Hogwarts (plus even in this day, AJ was as competent at using computers as her grandparents), the owlery was the only way to deliver a letter.
"Almost!" One girl called back, and AJ rolled her eyes, leaning on the balcony. The cool breeze carried swirling flakes through the air, and her eyes followed its spiraling path down to the school grounds. And that was when she saw her.
"Hey, guys!" the Gryffindor called back inside.
"We're almost done, seriously!" Her other friend snapped back. AJ let out an explosive sigh and shook her head.
"Nix that! Guess who's on her way over!"
Her two friends came zooming out the owlery, and AJ had to hold onto the back of her friend's green plaid coat so she wouldn't go toppling over the balcony.
"Is it Adrian? Oh, that boy is gorgeous!" One of them cooed, and AJ laughed.
"No, it's her," She nodded casually to the girl crossing the grounds. AJ knew it was petty, and it was low, and it was over dramatic, and she hated drama. But more than drama, she hated her.
It had been a while since they ran into each other. What was it now? A couple months? That was some good, solid avoiding time. But it was bound to end eventually. And it seemed like today was 'eventually'.
"Ugh, does she have her cat?" Matilda, the Ravenclaw, asked. AJ squinted down, unable to see the answer to her friend's question.
The three girls crowded the balcony, devising their plans. And when the girl drew closer, they hushed up and turned, less-than-innocent smiles their hottest accessory.
"Hey Samantha," AJ greeted, and her dark eyes seemed to spark with mischief.

spinning a web that's hard to see;;of envy, greed, and jealousy. Samantha was normally a morning person, but today she felt differently. She usually got up early and overachieved at whatever needed overachieving. Last night, though, she had quite the trouble falling asleep, for reasons unknown, and had stayed up staring at the ceiling of her dorm the majority of the night. She was planning on staying in bed for a bit longer this morning, due to her lack of slumber. But, as luck would have it, her cat, Blacky, had woken her up, scratching and chewing onsomething and making quite the racket. Hoping to cease the noise before anyone else in her dorm room got angry with her (not that she cared, really), she had rose out of bed and picked up the creature in an attempt to calm it down. Luckily, it was someone else's textbook that the cat had been gnawing on, not her own. So, that wasn't her problem. On her way out of her dorm room, though, before she really had time to react, her silly cat had scratched her! It never scratched her! It leaped from her arms and darted out of the common room, squeezing through the opening just as someone else was leaving. Great, it was time to go hunt down her cat again for the third time this week. Over the recent months it just seemed to be acting stranger and stranger, and it was really bugging Sam. Blacky had been her cat for a while, and though she wasn't going to admit it, this behavior was quite depressing.
She had figured out by now, that Blacky's favorite place to run to was the owlery, where she would mess with the birds. So, that was where Samantha was headed. She threw on her school robes and headed out into the wintry air, ready to hunt her disturbed kitty. As she got closer to the owlery, she looked up and noticed some other people gathered there. Were they looking at her? No, she was just getting paranoid, right? Well, she could probably just ask them if they saw a black cat run in there.
As she neared, though, she began to recognize them. Annabelle and her 'people'. Her clique. Whatever you wanted to call them. She never bothered to remember the names of the other girls that this particular Gryffindor hung out with. She had been having a fine year for the most part, not having run into this girl very much. Which was good, since she hated her. First off, she just went about herself like she was more superior than Samantha. One point. Then, there was the fact that she was a Gryffindor. Point two. And don't forget the main reason she loathed this girl with a passion; she had hexed her beloved Blacky. That could be a great explanation on why her cat had been acting weird. Let's just say, she was very high up there on Sam's 'hate' list.
She looked toward the darker-headed girl, her eyes narrowing as she came to a stop. The sound of Annabelle's voice made her skin crawl, and she was already in a bad mood. She crossed her arms over her chest stubbornly, "What did you do with her?" she hissed menacingly, obviously referring to her cat. With the look in the Gryffindor girl's eyes, she probably roasted Blacky for breakfast and enjoyed every second of it. She probably had the other girls do her dirty work for her, though, since Sam knew her not to be very good with animals ever since she had hexed her cat.

IT'S COLD OUTSIDE+ + + but between us it's worse in here
The two other girls, Matilda and Jasmine, looked at each other, puzzled by Samantha's vague accusation. But AJ seized the opportunity, a master at improv.
"Nothing she didn't deserve, I assure you," She wasn't entirely positive who Samantha was talking about, but she had a pretty good guess. Approximately half of their fights were over one thing, and that was the damn cat.
"Why don't you come see for yourself?" AJ tipped her head in the direction of the owlery, a terrible smirk on her lips. She didn't like being a bully, but the best defense was a good offense. Samantha had it out for her ever since that one spring day. The cat rubbed up against AJ as she was practicing her magic on the school grounds. It obviously didn't have any self-preservation instincts, nor was it a good judge of character. For some reason, it liked AJ (at least at the time), and AJ was less than ecstatic to be victim of it's attention. It mewled, and AJ shrieked, pointing her spell at the crazed animal to defend herself.
According to Samantha, it was never the same after that. According to AJ, it was Samantha's own fault to let her demented pet wander around on its own.
AJ turned her body, though kept her eyes on Samantha. For two reasons really; the first was on principle. Never turn your back on your opponent, especially if they were annoyed. The second reason... there were owls in there, and she was NOT going to chance seeing one and blowing her cool. Jasmine, a Hufflepuff, stepped aside to make room for Samantha to pass, and she eyed AJ curiously. What was she planning?

spinning a web that's hard to see;;of envy, greed, and jealousy. At AJ's next words, Sam's icy blue eyes narrowed into slits. Of course, she had to believe that this was something she would do. She was a fool, and Sam was sure she would have her pay dearly for this sick little joke. At that moment, she figured she would never dislike someone as much as she disliked the girl standing in front of her at this precise moment. She glanced toward the owlery, then back toward AJ, not even bothering to look at the other two girls.
"And I though you couldn't get any more immature, but there you go again, taking advantage of creatures that are much smaller and defenseless compared to you," she responded icily, "It's pretty pathetic if you ask me. I mean honestly, the poor thing never even does anything to you!" she barked. She shook her head slightly, "I have a better idea. How about you lead me in there and show me," she growled.
Luckily for her, she always remembered to bring her wand wherever she went, in case she would need it. In a situation like this, she figured she would need it. Usually when she encountered Annabelle, she would end up withdrawing her wand after a short amount of time, because she didn't have that much patience. She was worried for Blacky, sure, but still suspicious of the girl who stood in front of her. She was not to be trusted, so why would she listen to what she said? It could easily be a trap, and Sam was intelligent enough to identify that.

IT'S COLD OUTSIDE+ + + but between us it's worse in here
AJ let Samantha's insults roll off her; her hate for animals was so immense that the thought of hurting them didn't bother her at all. Call her cold, or cruel, or insensitive. When you don't like eggs, you don't give a damn if someone drops one on the floor. What she did react to was Samantha suggesting AJ go into the owlery.
The Gryffindor blanched visibly, and her girlfriends laughed at the thought. They'd been trying to get their pal to join them for years, but gave up after AJ threw a fit of epic proportions after a 'surprise' trip to the wizarding Zoo.
"There is no way I'm going in there. I don't care about your cat," She was a little smug to learn that her suspicions were correct, and the animal was what Sam was worried about, "If you want it back so bad, you're going to have to go it alone. Now, if you'll excuse me!"
AJ took a couple steps down the stairs till she was a step away from the blonde Ravenclaw. A head taller, because of their positions, she was able to look down her nose at the younger student. She was clearly waiting for the girl to move out of the way. At the top of the stairs, her girlfriends exchanged looks of confusion. Hadn't they planned to...?
"Mattie? Jaz? I think we're done here," She hinted, obviously a little peeved that her friends weren't as clever as she was. AJ cast Samantha a cursory glance, and added as an afterthought, "You might want to invest in cat therapy after this." Her grin was all-teeth, designed to provoke and inspire fear. It would be responsible for all sorts of awful mental images, and she hoped it was enough to get Samantha to push past her and dash into the owlery to save her cat from a fictional torture.

spinning a web that's hard to see;;of envy, greed, and jealousy. Samantha watched the older girl carefully as she spoke, taking not of her expressions and tone of voice to see if this was a trick of some sort, or maybe the girl really had done something to her dear cat. Her eyes remained narrow as the girl descended down the stairs until she stood in front of her, as if waiting for her to move out of the way. She held her tongue until the girl was finished speaking. She glanced up at her two little friends and couldn't help but let out a small chuckle at how they seemed to just follow AJ around like dogs.
She brought her eyes back down to meet the rival girl's. A look of panic flickered across Sam's face before she was able to cover it up. The look on the brunette's face was just enough to scare her. Her words were evil and menacing, but Sam tried to remain still, even though she wanted to run into the owlery immediately. Whatever had happened to the animal, it was too late to make any difference, "Well, I really don't get why you won't go in there with me.. it's just a couple of owls. All you have to do is show me where my cat's remains are, but you can't even do that?" she taunted, noting the signs that seemed to point toward Annabelle's fear of animals, or something of that nature, "It's a shame that you're scared of little owls, too. Hell, I bet you're scared of toads," she sneered, trying to keep her calm despite the fear and anger raging within her. She just hoped her cat wasn't too damaged. She turned to glance at the other two girls, "And seriously? Do you really want to spend the rest of your school time following this psychopath around?" Sam asked, keeping her voice even as she shook her head slightly.

IT'S COLD OUTSIDE+ + + but between us it's worse in here
Even after all this time, did Samantha not understand the extent of AJ's phobia? Or maybe she did, and the proposal to join her in the owlery wasn't serious. AJ's eyes narrowed, trying to discern what this girl was trying to say.
"You know what, I don't think you're going to have a problem finding your cat. It's just... hanging around," AJ taunted, getting a little annoyed that Sam wasn't falling for her trap quickly enough. She might have to paint a more vivid picture. "If you honestly love it as much as you claim to, I don't understand why you're still standing here. It's not dead. Yet."
As the Ravenclaw turned to address AJ's friends, she turned her head slightly. She of course knew her friends were loyal (at least Jas was), and their current sniggering confirmed that they were still on her side. They knew AJ hadn't really done anything to the cat; AJ never would do anything as horrific as she claimed to have done now. Just getting close enough to an animal to do that was beyond her capabilities. And contrary to Samantha's belief, AJ was not some sick and twisted animal torturer. Blood and death was not something AJ found entertaining in the slightest. AJ knew this, and her friends knew this, and unless that changed she couldn't see them turning on her for Samantha's benefit.
Satisfied with her conclusion, she turned back to Samantha and rose an eyebrow.
"This psychopath is going for breakfast now. Ciao!" And she stepped around the blonde, not bothering to enlarge their proximity by too much. She grinned at her friends to follow, and they walked around Samantha. AJ continued down the steps, careful on the ice, hoping that the additional space they gave her would tempt Samantha to venture into the owlery on her own. It looked like they were just going to leave, and what reason did they have to stay?

spinning a web that's hard to see;;of envy, greed, and jealousy. Samantha stood as if made of stone, her arms remained crossed across her chest. She studied Annabelle intently as she spoke, trying to understand if what she said was really the truth. At times it was hard to tell, but Sam couldn't help but think the worst. Either she was really good at this, or she had actually harmed her cat, and wasn't at all bothered by that fact.
She glanced back at her little groupies, studying them as well. She decided to keep quiet for once as they began to step around her, heading on their way to 'breakfast'. She had to keep calm, though inside she was freaking out, fearing the worst of what she would see when she stepped into that owlery. She didn't want to seem all to desperate, though, so she gave AJ one last glare before taking a couple steady steps toward the owlery. With one last hope that Annabelle was pulling off an act, she stepped into the owlery. It seemed like the older girl had won this little dispute.
